What to pack for a Kenya safari
Soft bags, warm layers and a good pair of binoculars: our practical packing list.

Packing for a safari is simpler than many people expect. Most camps offer a laundry service, and on light aircraft you will be limited to a soft bag of around 15 kg in total — so less really is more.
Clothing
- Neutral colours: khaki, olive, beige and brown (avoid bright white and dark blue, which attracts tsetse flies)
- Layers: mornings and evenings can be cold, especially on open vehicles and in the highlands
- A warm fleece or light down jacket
- Long sleeves and trousers for evenings (mosquitoes)
- A wide-brimmed hat and comfortable closed shoes
Equipment
- Binoculars — ideally one pair per person
- Camera with a zoom lens and spare batteries and memory cards
- A headtorch for walking around camp at night
- Universal adapter (Kenya uses UK-style plugs)
Health and documents
- Sunscreen, insect repellent and any personal medication
- Your passport, travel authorisation and a copy of your travel insurance
- A yellow fever certificate if your route requires it
Leave at home
Hard-shell suitcases, camouflage clothing (not permitted in some countries) and plastic carrier bags (banned in Kenya).
