Lake Naivasha is the highest of the Rift Valley lakes and one of the few with fresh water. Fringed by yellow-barked fever trees and papyrus, it is a relaxed stop between Nairobi and the Masai Mara, and one of the few places on a Kenya safari where you can walk among giraffe and zebra.
Boat trips bring you close to large pods of hippos and to the African fish eagles that hunt from the lakeshore trees.
Hippos, waterbuck and more than 400 recorded bird species around the lake. On Crescent Island and in nearby sanctuaries, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and gazelle graze in the open, with no large predators.
A gentle cruise to see hippos and fish eagles up close.
Walk among giraffe, zebra and wildebeest with a local guide.
Ride through red cliffs and gorges in a national park with no big predators.
Climb the nearby volcano for views over the Rift Valley.
Naivasha can be visited all year. The driest months are January to March and June to October; April and May bring heavier rain.
About 2 hours by road from Nairobi, and often combined with Lake Nakuru and the Masai Mara on a road safari.
