Kilimanjaro or Mount Kenya: which mountain is right for you?

Africa’s two highest mountains offer very different experiences. Here is how to choose.

Both mountains rise from the plains near the Equator, both pass through spectacular afro-alpine landscapes, and both can be climbed without technical skills. But they feel very different.

Kilimanjaro: the big one

At 5,895 m, Uhuru Peak is the highest point in Africa. The routes are well established, crews are large and experienced, and reaching the summit is a genuine life milestone. The main challenge is altitude: choosing a longer route such as Machame or Lemosho greatly improves your chances.

  • Summit: Uhuru Peak, 5,895 m
  • Typical length: 6–8 days on the mountain
  • Busier, especially on popular routes in peak season

Mount Kenya: the beautiful one

Point Lenana (4,985 m) is Mount Kenya’s trekking summit. The mountain is quieter, wilder and, many trekkers say, more scenic, with glacier lakes, valleys and close views of the rocky main peaks.

  • Summit: Point Lenana, 4,985 m
  • Typical length: 4–5 days
  • Fewer trekkers and more varied scenery

Which should you choose?

If you want to stand on the highest point in Africa, choose Kilimanjaro and give yourself enough days. If you prefer quieter trails and spectacular scenery, or have less time, Mount Kenya is a superb choice — and it is also excellent acclimatisation before Kilimanjaro.

Whichever you choose, we organise experienced guides, porters, quality equipment and transfers, and we can combine your trek with a safari or a beach stay.
